The investigation into the fatal stabbing of Seb Creane and the wounding of his girlfriend Jen Hannigan and brother Dylan Creane is now focusing on Clancy’s mental state in the days before the killing – and whether his actions were premeditated.

RELATIONSHIP

The Herald understands that Clancy, a teetotal fourth year Trinity College student from Dalkey, was suffering from depression in recent weeks after learning that his ex-girlfriend Hannigan had embarked on a new relationship with photography student Seb.

Gardai are today examining if Shane Clancy planned the killing in advance, offering Seb Creane a lift home from a Dalkey club with the planned intention of attacking him and Ms Hannigan.

Clancy had planned to take an extended holiday in Australia, it is understood, but could not go ahead with the trip and remained at his Dalkey home instead for the summer.

Officers are now trying to establish if Clancy remained in his car outside the Creane home at Cuala Grove in Bray after dropping Seb Creane home, before arming himself with a knife and then entering the property to confront Seb Creane and Ms Hannigan.

They have not yet formally interviewed Ms Hannigan or Dylan Creane, who remain seriously ill in hospital, following surgery. A third potential witness who was in the house, musician Laura Mackey, remains deeply traumatised by the incident and has not been interviewed.

Their accounts of what happened in the early hours of last Sunday morning are crucial to the probe into the tragedy.

STABBING

Clancy fatally stabbed Seb Creane in a bedroom of the house, before stabbing Ms Hannigan in the back and breaking off part of the knife, which remained embedded in her. He then attacked Mr Creane's brother Dylan, stabbing him six times, once through the lung. Ms Mackey was not attacked.

Seconds after the violence, Clancy walked into the back garden of the house and stabbed himself once in the chest, dying in the garden.

Post mortems on the bodies of the killer and Seb Creane last night officially confirmed that both died from stab wounds.

As the investigation into the murder suicide continued today, more details emerged about the background to the deaths.

The obsessed Clancy, who was a Middle Eastern Studies student at TCD, split from Killiney woman Jennifer Hannigan about a year ago, having dated for three years, and was depressed since the break-up, it is understood.

In the hours before the killing Seb Creane is believed to have socialised with a group of former schoolpals from St Gerard's school in Bray early on Saturday evening at the Eagle House pub in Glasthule.

While at the pub, Creane and his pals met up with other schoolfriends, along with four women, who were with Shane Clancy.

The group of nine people then went to the Queen's pub in Dalkey, it is understood, and on to the Vico Club in Dalkey.

ALCOHOL

At this point Clancy, who did not drink alcohol, offered to drive Mr Creane and two other men home to Bray. He drove the other young men to their houses before moving on to Cuala Grove with Mr Creane.

Gardai are trying to establish if Clancy remained in the car after dropping Mr Creane off at his house, before walking from the car in the property and attacking Seb Creane in the bedroom, Ms Hannigan on the stairs, and Dylan Creane.

Gardai completed their investigation of the crime scene last night, but Seb Creane's parents, Jim and Nuala. have not returned to the house. They were on vacation at the time of the murder-suicide.

Details of Shane Clancy's funeral were released today. One of a family of seven he will be buried on Thursday following a service in Dalkey.
