The 'Bray Bloodbath’ which left two young men dead occurred after a row over a young woman.

Trinity student Shane Clancy (22) knifed pal Sebastian Creane to death in the early hours of yesterday morning

after the pair argued following a night out over a woman they both knew, sources said.

Clancy, from Dalkey, repeatedly stabbed hisfriend, before attacking the victim’s brother, Dylan, and an innocent young woman at the Creane family’s home in Bray, Co Wicklow, after a drink-fuelled night out.

The knifeman killed himself in the back garden of the house at Cuala Grove as house guest Jennifer Hennigan (22) frantically called the emergency services and Dylan Creane (28) lay seriously injured in the house.

A source told the Herald: “The motive appears to be a row over a young woman, who Clancy was obsessed with. He had words with Seb Creane and then just exploded."

Sebastian's grieving parents Jim and Nuala are being comforted by relatives after they returned from a holiday in Spain yesterday.

Nuala Creane is a well-known special needs teacher in the local area, who runs her business from the family home at Cuala Grove, a small middle-class estate in the town.

Post-mortem tests were due to be carried out today to establish if Shane Clancy had taken illegal substances prior to his death. The bodies of both men are likely to be released to their families for burial tomorrow.

The tragedy unfolded in Bray in the early hours of yesterday morning, after Shane Clancy and Sebastian Creane -- known to his friends as Seb -- returned to the Creane family home after a night out.

Clancy is believed to have driven to the Creane home, where three other people were present -- Seb's brother Dylan, and two young women, Jennifer Hennigan, from Bray, and musician Laura Mackey (27).

They got back to the house around 4am, and 30 minutes later a row broke out there, it is understood.

Clancy struck Creane, who then ran to his bedroom and tried to barricade himself inside. But Clancy, who had taken a knife from the kitchen, got into the room and stabbed Seb Creane a number of times.

At this point Seb Creane's brother Dylan, who had been sleeping in another room, confronted Clancy, in an upstairs room in the house. Clancy stabbed him at least eight times, and punctured one of his lungs.

Leaving Dylan Creane for dead, Clancy then ran down the stairs at the house, where he was confronted by a shocked Jennifer Hennigan. He kicked and beat her, before lunging at her with a knife.

Such was the frenzy of the attack that the knife snapped as he struck her, breaking and leaving a section of blade sticking out of Ms Hennigan's back.

She ran from the house to raise the alarm, as Laura Mackey tried to assist the dying Seb Creane and his seriously injured brother.

Gardai from Bray and fire ambulance crews from Loughlinstown, Wicklow and Dublin, then attended the scene.

Once the injured persons were removed from the property the house was sealed off, and gardai began to search for Shane Clancy.

Hours later they found Clancy's body at the rear of the property. He had used the knife to kill himself in the back garden.

Dylan Creane was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for his wounds. They are not life threatening.

Ms Hennigan was also treated for her injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

Ms Mackey, a musician with Dublin band Boss Volenti, was treated for severe shock.

Gardai say they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

Det Insp Frank Keeneghan said: "This is a very, very tragic incident. The families are absolutely devastated."

Seb Creane was a student at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, and a former pupil at the fee-paying St Gerard's School in Bray.

The Cuala Grove house remained sealed off this morning pending further forensic examination.

A neighbour confirmed that that alarm was raised after one of the victims came crying for help to her door, but the woman was too distressed to recall the events surrounding the deaths.

Other neighbours said the Creanes have been living in the area for around 20 years, and that they were well-liked.

One man said he thought he had seen the maroon coloured car driven by Shane Clancy in the area before, but could not be certain.

One neighbour said: "It is an awful tragedy. Nobody knows what happened, but our hearts go out to the families."

Sebastian's parents James and Nuala are understood to be staying with relatives while dealing with the shocking events and while their other son Dylan is still being treated in hospital.

"It seems to have been a sudden burst of violence that ended as quick as it started. It is truly shocking," he added.

Cuala Grove is a quiet mature cul-de-sac of only 10 houses in the shadow of Bray Head, not far from the coast.
