Broadcasting and Internet communication. This combination has triggered the growth of
awareness of SSRI danger. It has united the many thousands of victims of SSRIs across the
world with some professionals who have laboured so long in a cause for saving lives, seeking justice and exposing dysfunctional drug regulation. Chart 5 shows that the tide has turned in the UK. Great encouragement should be taken from this life saving victory. However efforts must continue both to expose the known risks of paroxetine (Seroxat, Paxil) and all the other ill validated SSRIs and to call for the establishment an effective independent Drug Safety Regulator in every country, the absence of which is the root cause of this ongoing officially supported tragedy.

Sold as Seroxat in the UK, the drug is "defective" under Britain's 1987 Consumer Protection Act--or so says the patients' attorney, Mark Harvey of the law firm Hugh James. A few of his clients have not been able to stop taking Seroxat because of their withdrawal symptoms, he says. When they began treatment, not only was there no warning of withdrawal problems on the drug's label, but it specifically stated that the drug was not addictive.



Harvey has been working on this suit since at least 2004, when it first became fashionable to sue Glaxo for Paxil/Seroxat-related woes. When I tapered off Paxil I used an oral syringe. I 'came down' by half a mg per week and it took me 18 months to taper down from 40mg per day to 22mg per day. That is NOT a discontinuation, that IS a withdrawal. Paxil IS addictive, there are thousands of stories of people suffering because they cannot taper off this drug.




After 18 months I went cold turkey. It took me 3 months to get passed the zaps, profuse sweating, anger outbursts, suicidal thoughts, craving (temptation to go back on Paxil) plus a whole host of other side effects.




There are over 10,000 stories online from patients who have suffered withdrawal symptoms at the hands of Paxil. To suggest that antidepressants are not addictive is basically sticking your middle finger up to those that have... and still are suffering trying to taper off this drug.

Seroxat Panorama watched by 4.4 million - produced only 1,374 e-mails !

An estimated 4.4m people recently watched “Secrets of Seroxat” (Panorama, BBC-TV), a 50-minute programme about paroxetine, an SSRI antidepressant for which UK general practitioners wrote an estimated 4.7m prescriptions in 2001. The programme attracted a record response, including some 65,000 telephone calls, 124,000 website hits, and 1,374 emails.We systematically analysed the contents of these emails, and in this paper consider how they might help clinicians and their patients, as well as providing an indispensable element in pharmacovigilance and post-marketing drug surveillance.

Analysis of yellow-card data suggests that adverse publicity, particularly the three Panorama programmes, was associated with marked, short-term peaks in reporting (Figure 2). The mean rate of yellow-card reporting (per 100 000 prescriptions) in the month before each regulatory announcement was 7.6 vs. 8.0 in the month after. In contrast, the mean rate of yellow-card reporting in the month before each media publicity episode was 8.3 vs. 13.4 in the month after. An identical pattern of peaks and troughs in yellow-card reporting of suspected adverse drug reactions to paroxetine was observed when the temporal trend in number of reports was plotted (data not shown).
