paranoid schizophrenic faces forced sedation & surgery UK - but no outcry from FIDDAMAN?

A High Court judge has given medics permission to sedate and restrain a mentally-ill woman who has a phobia about hospitals but needs treatment for bladder cancer.

Mrs Justice Baron said she was 'absolutely convinced' that treatment was necessary, which is why she sanctioned the intervention.

The judge said the woman, who is in her fifties and cannot be identified for legal reasons, was a paranoid schizophrenic who had bladder cancer which was at an early stage.

Mrs Justice Baron said treatment was 'relatively simple' but the woman was unlikely to comply with a request to go to hospital because of her phobia.

The judge, sitting in the Court of Protection in London, said medics could sedate the woman and use a 'minimum' amount of force in order to get her to hospital and administer treatment 'if necessary'.

'I am absolutely convinced that the treatment is necessary,' said the judge.

'All means should be taken to ensure she suffers the least distress possible and maintains the maximum amount of dignity.'

Court of Protection judges deal with cases involving vulnerable people and usually sit in private.

Mrs Justice Baron outlined her order at a public hearing but said nothing should be published which could identify the woman - who was represented by a lawyer - including the name of the hospital where she would be treated.

She granted an order allowing medics to use sedation and force following an application from hospital bosses.

The judge said doctors had dealt with the woman in an 'appropriate and sensitive' manner.

An excessive fear of hospitals is defined as Nosocomephobia.
