The DeLorean DMC-12 is going back to the future with a fully-electric powertrain.
The original DeLorean DMC-12 began production in 1986 but didn’t quite live up to expectations thanks to lacklustre performance from its 148bhp V6 engine. This new version, though, is aiming to change all that with a 200bhp electric motor that should be good enough for a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds.
It’s built by the Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company and should be on the road by 2013. It was first displayed publicly at the international DeLorean Owners Event in Houston, Texas, featuring a new interior with an iPhone dock and bespoke steering wheel.
The company revealed that the batteries add around 90kgs to the already hefty kerbweight and they’ve been positioned to give the car a 35/65 weight-distribution.
This new fully-electric DMC-12 is made up of around 80 per cent original parts but the suspension has been up-rated for improved performance.
As yet there is no official price-tag for the DMC-12 but expect further details nearer the release date.
