22 Nov 2002 - "been on incapacity benefit for 5 years" (( strange that didn't prevent him from working @ NEC !! ))

source - http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.community.social-housing/browse_thread/thread/5c5c4f6cd5fb65b8?hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&q=fiddy+divorce

My wife of 18 years and I have both decided to divorce. So far things are
pretty amicable with us agreeing that we should sell our house and split
everything down the middle. This will result in each of us gaining about
£30,000 each. My wife has already begun flat hunting for herself and the
kids and I have been scouring the net looking for property for myself.

My problem is that I have been on incapacity benefit for 5 years and have just recently been successful in my claim for Disability Living Allowance, albeit the lower rate.
I cannot apply for council housing as I am still deemed to be a homeowner.
However once the house is sold I shall be homeless if I do not have a place
to move into by then. Will I have to wait until then before I can apply for
housing from the council or is there a way around this?

I also have two Occupational Pensions that have been 'froze' due to me
leaving work and we both have the mortgage in joint names along with an
endowment policy. Would I be able to 'cash in' my Occupational Pensions due
to at last being recognised as having a disability and what happens about
the endowment policy my wife and I have?

I am desperate to move so I can rebuild my life again but am in no financial
position to move until the house is sold. Any guidance on this matter would
be really appreciated.

Many Thanks

Bob - Birmingham

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like your assistance in the following matter.

I was employed by Land Rover in October 1989 and subsequently subscribed to
the T&G Union.

In 1996 I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis of both hips and after a spell
off work was placed on the long term absence register.

In 1998, Rover were offering their employees redundancy packages due to a
cut back in the work force for financial reasons. Because o the prospect of
me returning to work were slim I offered myself for voluntary redundancy. To
my utter disbeleif I was told that I could not apply for voluntary
redundancy because I was on the long term absence register! Apparently, the
T&Ghave a consolidated agreement which prevents members on the long term
absence register applying for voluntary redundancy.

I applied for ill health early retirement but my application was turned down
by the Rover trustees because it was deemed that I did not meet the
criteria.

In Febuary 1999 I was deemed fit to work by the DHSS so I offered my
servicesto Rover stating that I could work, allbeit in a different capacity.
I was told vehermently by Julie Kane, Operations Manager, that there was no
job for me at Rover.

My Disability Employment Advisor, Felicity Davies, also telephone Rover on
my behalf but once again was told that there was no job for me at Rover
!

Shortly after this refusal my wife suffered a complete nervous breakdown and
I myself was treated for clinical depression.

I applied to the Industrial Tribunals and after an interlocutory hearing my
case eas et to be heard. Rover have been granted no less than 5
postponements and now my case is set for November 2000, though I am not
holding my breath for this to be heard.

In between all of this I appealed against the trustees descision via the
occupational health department based at Rover, Solihull. No answer was ever
given to me about my appeal!

I reapplied for ill health early retirement earlier this year and was sent
all the relevant papers stating how much my lump sum was to be and how much
my annual pension was to be. There was even a retirement date of 30/06/2000
on top of the document.

However, I was turned down once again by the trustees because I did not meet
the criteria. I have asked for reasons via my employment law advisor,
Suzanne Kynes Dobbie, but we have recieved no word from them.

We served a questionnaire on Rover in which they had 21 days to answer. They
have still not answered. They have had 2 months in which to do so.

I have contacted Bill Morriss, General Secetary of the T&G, who has passed
my papers on to regional secretarys of the union. Nothing has been resolved.

Earlier this year I was admitted to hospital after taking an overdose of
anti-depressants.
Rover were made aware of this via my employment law
advisor though this didn't seem to bother them.

I have many mounting bills and my marraige is becoming a sham because of all
of this.

I would therefore like a full and thorough investigation by yourself into
this matter.

Please DO NOT refer me to CAB's or to Union officials or to Opas.

Something wrong has occured here and it is my beleif that the T&G have
liased with Rover officials to set up this long term absence register as a
smokescreen to sacking someone.

I am at my lowest point in life and have seriously considered ending it all.

It is only my three small children who are preventing me from another
suicide attempt.

Please, Please help.

I can be contacted on 0121-624-0473

My employment law advisor can be contacted on 0121-777-0900.

Fiddaman said "I had to wipe my arse with my boxer shorts then throw them "

If it makes you fell any better Doof - I followed through once at Villa
Park - Home of Aston Villa FC. Like most footy grounds in the UK there was
no bog roll so I had to wipe my arse with my boxer shorts then throw them
away. At least I had a row of seats to myself - no fucker would sit next to
me.

Worked as Concert Security for 12 months at Birmingham NEC. Witnessed rock chic at Motley Crue concert giving some lucky punter some serious head, played football with Simply Red, told a fan of Barry Manilow that the reason why John Leslie (UK folks know who he is) was at the show was because he was going to show the kids how to papermache' a nose on Blue Peter, the Manilow fan wanted my guts, she reported me...heheheheh

Played Badminton with Cliff Richards road crew, threw an Asian out with a swift kick in the bollocks for molesting a punter (NOT a racist thing - just don't like seeing women getting 'touched up'.

Witnessed a baby in arms at the front of a Quo concert - I kid you not.

Backstage for a 60's gig - Met Martha, of Martha and the Mandella's fame -
she gave me her sandwich and coke (cola).

Took a piss next to Roy Wood

Met Ron Atkinson (then Aston Villa manager) and spoke about the state of the
team he was managing - two weeks later he was sacked!!!!!

Did 14 nights of Cliff Richard - cunt nearly drove me to drugs - Manilow was
much better.

Neil Diamond opened my eyes - the guy puts on a really good show.

Faith No More (Remember them?) did a fantastic show, marred by their fans
ripping up seats and lobbing them into the arena.

Was chatted up by women loads of times - they actually thought I could get
them backstage.

Not bad for a fat fucker with Osteoarthritis eh?

Man with bilateral osteoarthritis is Corinthians football coach !!

Corinthians were formed in 1997 by Pat Gillespie and Nick Clark. Unhappy at the lack of football their respective sons were playing for Arden Forest they decided to start up their own team, thus Corinthians were born.

The name Corinthians was chosen by Nick Clark. When asked by the league secretary whilst registring the team over the telephone Nick spied a toy box with the name 'Corinthians' written on it!

Corinthians record victory came in 1998 against the now disbanded Water Orton Wanderers, where they ran out winners by 17 goals to nil.

Corinthians entered an 11- a - side tournament in Great Yarmouth in 1999. Nothing was won but a great weekend was had by all.

Our club president is Eric Foster, he can be seen most Friday's enjoying a tipple with Bob Fiddaman (coach) and Nick Clark (manager) down at the Lyndon Pub.
Two former players of Corinthians, Domonic Sutcliffe and Gary Gillespie, have recently signed new contracts for Birmingham City Youth Academy.

Coach Bob Fiddaman was once the Poetry Slam Champion of Birmingham (1998)

The 1999/00 season saw Corinthians reach the semi-finals of the League Shield only to be beaten by 2nd Division outfit Maypole Juniors by 3 -1.

Seroxat Group meeting - "far less to do with seeking after truth than saving ministerial/departmental face"

so Fiddaman is not the only sucker - MHRA took the seroxat user group for a ride too !!

The contrast between the sugary invitation to the SUG and your refusal of Dr Healy’s and my request that I should attend the November meeting was too much to swallow. I could only conclude that this volte face had far less to do with seeking after truth than saving ministerial/departmental face. After more than five years of being held at bay, while attempting to explain how the MCA/CSM was contributing to a vast amount of unnecessary suffering, I did not think anything much would be gained by going to a "private and informal meeting" between the SUG and Dr Mackay, especially when the MCA had refused SUG’s request to record the proceedings.

The Police cannot do anything until 'something' happens.

Firstly, is it legal for my sister and her children to carry and use a stun

Secondly, where can I buy stun guns from?

15 Dec 1999

I have been verbally bullied by senior

I did get in touch with a law firm but unfortunately they were closed down by the Law Society. My papers are now with a Law Advisor who assures me that everything will be fine. I am now at my wits end, and have i the past attempted suicide to rid me of this pain.

Is there anyone out there who can put me out of my misery?

You don't have to be confined to a wheelchair to be classed as disabled! I
never knew such narrow - minded people still existed.

I have osteoarthritis of both hips - my employer, Land Rover, cannot/will
not find me alternative work nor make reasonable adjustments to the
workplace.

I can walk as good as the rest of 'em though it does cause discomfort.

So now we're back to square one, Bob Fiddaman playing the eternal victim and expecting unconditional sympathy from everyone. Christ, if I was home twoyears, I'd damn well want to kill myself too.

I was home almost two MONTHS after my surgery this year, and I almost lost my mind. I was not a cool guy to be around. It got so bad I went back to work before I should have, and now my shoulder hurts like fuck all the time. But I decided I'd rather work in pain than sit on my ass recuperating, because I had no business
subjecting my wife and children to my constant mood swings and petulent
bouts of depression.

Bottom line: It is MY OPINION that you have allowed self-absorption and a vendetta with Rover to influence you in making decisions which have benefited no one but been detrimental to your family. Now go ahead and get all hyper-defensive if you must, but I'm not going to sit here and lie to
you about what I think.

> As you know I returned to work today only to find out that there have been
a
> number of jobs on offer for the past two years that I could have done.

Moral of the story: THEY WANT NO PART OF YOU. They didn't give you a sniff until the press was involved, so what makes you think they won't manufacture an excuse to fire your ass as soon as the reporters stop calling?

For God's sake, you're being SO naive about all this.

> To have a disability is bad - to be discriminated against because of it is
> scandalous!!!!

And to cry about it is pitiful.

This is NOT the end of the matter. We are now asking for compensation for the time that I have been off work = £44,000

I am a 36 year old male and suffer with Osteoarthritis of the hips and more
recently wear & tear on the spine.

I am 5ft 10" and over 16 Stone. Obviously this weight gain cannot continue.

Because of lack of mobility I am unable to do any form of strenuous
excercise. I have therefore decided to go on some sort of diet.

Can anyone here recommend a good diet.

Are there any OA sufferers on this NG that plan their food out weekly?

I've heard that fish is good as it is full of the essential oils to help
lubricate the joints

Your help would be greatly appreciated

"The term "withdrawal" implies that you're addicted to a drug. But addiction is a complex pattern of behavior that involves craving, drug seeking, and needing more and more drug to achieve a desired effect. In that sense, antidepressants are not addicting"

I disagree. When I tapered off Paxil I used an oral syringe. I 'came down' by half a mg per week and it took me 18 months to taper down from 40mg per day to 22mg per day. That is NOT a discontinuation, that IS a withdrawal. Paxil IS addictive, there are thousands of stories of people suffering because they cannot taper off this drug.

After 18 months I went cold turkey. It took me 3 months to get passed the zaps, profuse sweating, anger outbursts, suicidal thoughts, craving (temptation to go back on Paxil) plus a whole host of other side effects. There are over 10,000 stories online from patients who have suffered withdrawal symptoms at the hands of Paxil. To suggest that antidepressants are not addictive is basically sticking your middle finger up to those that have... and still are suffering trying to taper off this drug.

What has Fiddaman to hide - why did he keep the "Haringey Police report" confidential ?

Let us know the expulsion details in your own good time... you have my email address if you'd prefer to keep it "confidential", like that Haringey Police report!!!

Oh yea Bob, you didnt deny that you were expelled for bullying did you??!!! I know your type!!
Nah Nah, I'm sure there was a perfectly innocent explanation. There's no way you'd have been a disruptive influence preventing progressive minded students from getting on with their studies!!
I was being ironic about "poor" Mister Blackburn. I dont know the ins and outs of the cervical cancer case, not having your Glaxo obsession (the ins and outs of a cervix is more my thing!!) but you must have a teensy weensy bit of sympathy for the professional reputation dent the fella suffered after your campaigning got him deposed from his prestigious position.

I was expelled because the Catholic school I went to wanted to punish me for something I didn't do. I was 15, if I remember correctly they wanted to give me six of the best for removing a lad from another school off my best mate. The lad in question had his hands around my friends throat and pinned to the floor. Desperate times - desperate measures. For that I was expelled, as was my friend. The lad from the other school went on to finish his educayshun [sp]

I remember it very well. The governer of the school, [a priest] smelling of stale cigarettes, the Headmaster, whiskey on his breath and a look of the Devil in his eye. And my mother, my beautiful mother, asking the priest if he would walk by and do nothing if the Headmaster was on the floor, pinned down with someones hands around his throat.

"That's not the point Mrs Fiddaman"

Hmmm, I actually thought it was rather a good point mom.

You see Tom, even the Catholics chose hypocrisy that day.

No doubt this will end up on my stalker's webpage, he will edit it in such a way that will make me the teacher and Tom Hunter the victim.

Anyway, I fear we may be going down the religious road in this thread and the last thing I need right now is quotes from the Bible.

Dont know why you said "for a Brummie"?? Do you feel that the rest of us cast aspersions on the IQ of the average Second City citizen?? Poetry moment - here's one wot I wrote earlier

Scales Of Justice

http://www.birminghampoetry.bravepages.com/fiddaman4.htm

Locked in a cell
Six feet by eight.
Only an hours recreation
Allowed by the state.
They call themselves welfare,
They'll attend to our needs.
All forgotten souls
With our unheard pleads.

Warder's knocking on my door
Waking me from my sleep.
Time to put my brave face on
Trying not to weep.
Time for communal breakfast
With the vast walks of life.
Cutting up the bacon & eggs
With the plastic prison knife.

Lights out at ten thirty
As another day goes by.
Peace in my cell at last
As I begin to cry.
There's frustration & anger
Building up inside
As I think about the plastic knife
And a place for it to hide.

Twenty years added
In the High Court today.
I used the knife on one of the screws
Now it's time to make me pay.
I took the beatings and the kicks
When I got back to my cell.
If this is what life is
Then I'd rather be in Hell.

Yeah know what ya mean. This year we had a presentation night for our youth
footy team - so half cut I asked (ahem!) demanded that the DJ play some
AC/DC.
To my astonishment he plucked out the Who Made Who 12" - I said "Fuck
me - you've got play GFH on the B Side. He promised he'd play it. So I was
mentally figuring out what part of the stage I should jump from
etc. About a
pint or so later I heard the dreaded tones of YSMANL. AGGGGH!!!!!!!!!!!!
None the less I still gave it my best shot - much to the bemusement of the
kids and the parents that had turned out for the Presentation that night!

don't forget to tell them about the time you jumped off the stage !

Bob Fiddaman - "Person Of The Year Award"

Person Of The Year Award

http://www.bigcountry.co.uk/forums/viewmessage/index.php?o=0&t=5170

Tom Hunter - Wednesday, 10 December 2008, at 6:24 pm
Well, it's the time of the year to reminisce about the last 12 months. The BBC will be giving the Sports Personality Of The Year Award for which I hope that Becky Adlington collects as her last gasp win in the 400 metres and her dominant world record performance in the 800 metres were awesome and all that for a girl on 12 grand a year!!

I suppose Barack Obama winning the Presidency is the most eye-catching and puts some sort of closure on African-Americans fight for equality. Let's hope that he is equal to the task of dealing with the challenging times ahead for America and the world at large.

My vote though goes to a regular contributor to this board: Bob Fiddaman.

This Birmingham based lad is a tour de force, a one man battering-ram pacifist. With just a keyboard and internet connection, a sense of injustice (and indeed a sense of justice) and a persistence that is truly superhuman this "one voice" blogging sensation has made the arrogant multibillion dollar pharmaceutical industry sit up and take notice.

A visit now and again to his blogspot http://fiddaman.blogspot.com/ will reveal the relentless, tigerish zeal with which this David is bringing Goliath to book for past misdeeds.

I didnt particularly like the guy ( maybe that's an understatement) and when I heard about him starting this blog a couple of years ago I said to myself that there's no way he'll persevere with this for any worthwhile length of time but lo and behold as events have unfolded this fella has not alone kept to the battle but has increased the intensity!!!
All this despite some personal setbacks which have included the passing away of his Mum. Adversity tests a man's mettle but this man's mettle has been found to be super-strong!!!

This heroic endeavour is deserving of something tangible so if he emails me privately his posting address I'll forward forthwith:

WESTERNS The Classic Collection

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

The Big Country

Both DVDs detail triumph over adversity, so Fidd McCool would be a most deserving recipient to enjoy a few hours entertainment (I'm sure he has seen these films before but maybe not on DVD??)!

PS. Sorry Barack, you just picked the wrong year to make your breakthrough!!! I'm sure you understand having visited the fiddaman blogspot!

Mother Sues Scientologists Over Son's 2007 Death

TAMPA - A mother is blaming Scientologists for her disabled son's death, which police ruled a suicide.

http://suncoastpinellas.tbo.com/content/2009/feb/17/mother-sues-scientologists-over-sons-2007-death/

Victoria L. Britton has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Scientologists, including her son's father, of taking his antidepressant prescription from him and giving him access to a loaded gun.

A police investigation, however, concluded that Kyle Brennan, exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia, willingly stopped taking medication before he visited his father and that there was "no evidence they were purposely kept from" him.

Brennan, 20, was not a member of the Clearwater church, but his father, Thomas, was, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court by Britton, who lives in Virginia.

The lawsuit names the church, Thomas Brennan and Scientologists Gerard Gentile and his wife, Denise Miscavige Gentile, whose brother, David Miscavige, is the church's ecclesiastic leader.

Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis said, "There is no validity to the complaint regarding the Church of Scientology."

The Gentiles could not be reached for comment.

Kyle Brennan visited his father in Clearwater in February 2007 after driving around the country for more than two months, according to the state attorney's investigation report. Along the way, he stopped at an FBI office in Iowa where he told an agent people were following him and that he had large sums of money.

When he arrived in Clearwater, he stayed in his father's apartment complex, which was occupied by other Scientologists, according to the lawsuit.

Davis said the apartment complex is not owned by the church.

According to the lawsuit, Kyle Brennan had Lexapro, a drug prescribed to treat depression and social anxiety. The Gentiles told Thomas Brennan to take the Lexapro away from his son, and Thomas Brennan locked the drug in his truck.

The Gentiles and Thomas Brennan tried to talk Britton into putting her son into a Scientology Narconon treatment facility so that he wouldn't need Lexapro, the lawsuit states. Britton and her son, who were not Scientologists, refused the treatment, and Britton told the callers to make sure her son took his medication.

Thomas Brennan said he and his son mutually agreed that Kyle would stop taking Lexapro and start using better nutrition habits and vitamins, according to a Clearwater police investigation summary.

Davis said Narconon, which follows the principles of church founder L. Ron Hubbard, is not officially part of the church, although it is supported and endorsed by Scientologists.

The lawsuit states that "one or more of the defendants" put Thomas Brennan's loaded .357 Magnum pistol next to his son's bed.

Then, "in a mentally deteriorated state caused by the abrupt denial of his prescription to Lexapro, and with ready access to the loaded .357 Magnum, Kyle Brennan was found dead from a gunshot to his head from the .357 Magnum pistol with neither the pistol nor the bullets having any identifiable fingerprints," the lawsuit states.

Thomas Brennan found his son dead Feb. 16, 2007, reports state.

The investigation report said Thomas Brennan had an unsecured handgun and ammunition in his apartment, but that the law doesn't require firearms to be secured unless there is someone younger than 16 living there.

Britton is represented by Ken Dandar, who also represented the relatives of Scientologist Lisa McPherson in their wrongful death lawsuit against the church.

McPherson died in 1995 after 17 days of care by Scientology staffers in Clearwater.

The lawsuit was settled in 2004.

Reporter Stephen Thompson contributed to this report. Elaine Silvestrini can be reached at (813) 259-7837 or esilvestrini@tampatrib.com.

This man stopped Seroxat "cold turkey" and was over it in three months

I know - I was on it for 6 years - try to wean off it for 18 months until eventually going cold turkey - that was actually the worst three months of my life but I had made the decision that it was not going to run my life anymore.

NHS Blog Doctor - what professionals really think about single issue pressure groups

NHS Blog Doctor: "[The JABs site] claims to support the parents of 'vaccine damaged' children. I joined the forum, interested to see if there was any good evidence of harm caused by vaccines. (Short answer - no.) What I actually found was a single issue pressure group, dedicated to stamping out vaccination in all forms, and a forum populated by utter nutters. The worst kind of shit-for-brains internet mentalist. I mean, real 'heads down no-nonsense mindless WOOOOOO!!!!' idiots."

SSRI-Crusaders : Message Consultant clinical pharmacologist Dr Andrew Herxheimer ignored !!

SSRI-Crusaders : Message: Teenager bludgeoned his father to death after GP prescribed him Prozac

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/SSRI-Crusaders/message/33621

Consultant clinical pharmacologist Dr Andrew Herxheimer(CORR), who examined Belben, said: 'The most striking thing he told me was... "a sudden thing came up in my head and I had to do it".'

Explaining Belben's emotions could have been 'blocked out by obsessive thoughts', he added: 'If he was in the grip of that thought that he had to kill Gary Belben, then having arranged to do it there was nothing else to be done.'

Dr Herxheimer said the adverse side-effects of SSRIs were vastly under-reported.

In one study, carried out on people without depression, up to one in 20 suffered adverse effects, including 'turbulence of emotions and compelling thoughts'.

In 2006, research revealed 40,000 children were still taking the drugs - with half having received no psychological support.

Wimpole Road Surgery refused to comment yesterday due to 'confidentiality issues'.

The local primary care trust, North East Essex NHS, also declined to discuss the case.

Prozac teenager kills father with hammer
A 15-year-old boy bludgeoned his father to death and attempted to murder his mother with a crowbar and a pair of scissors after suffering rare side effects of Prozac, a court heard.

Ed Belben lured his father Gary, 59, up to his bedroom before hitting him more than 30 times with a hammer and then plunging a knife into his head.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard the teenager then went downstairs and told his mother Tanya, 43, he had something to show her before trying to beat her to death with a crowbar and stabbing her with a pair of scissors.

Belben, now 17, had denied murder after arguing that his personality was changed when he began taking the antidepressant drug Prozac.

However, the jury did not accept his plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and found him guilty of the murder of his father and attempted murder of his mother.

After the attacks on December 17 2007 Belben fled the family home in Colchester, Essex, covered in "blood, bone and brain", and was later arrested by police.

The prosecution claimed the Ed Belben had got into a bad crowd, was being led astray by his young girlfriend and had taken a cocktail of street drugs, including cannabis, cocaine, crack cocaine, ketamine and amphetamine in the years leading to the attack.

Edward Rees, defending, claimed the attack was sparked by a dangerous build-up of Prozac which Belben had been prescribed to treat depression just a month before the fatal attack.

The court heard that doctors had prescribed 10mg of the antidepressant Citalopram in October 2007, which had been against medical guidelines for treating depressed youngsters.

In November 2007 he was then prescribed 20mg of Prozac, double the recommended minimum starting dosage.

Dr Andrew Herxheimer, a consultant clinical pharmacologist, said medical evidence showed the drugs could cause side affects including suicidal thoughts, compulsion to self harm and aggression.

He told the jury Prozac can build up in the body in the first few weeks of taking it as the body cannot process it quickly enough which makes "adverse consequences more likely".

Belben sobbed in the dock as the jury delivered its verdicts and was led out by two security guards.

Judge Michael Justice Tugendhatt adjourned the case for sentencing.

Speaking outside court Mrs Belben, a nursery school worker, said: "There are not enough words to describe how this has affected my life and the lives of my family and friends. We are devastated. We have lost the most wonderful man."

GSK Paxil/Seroxat sales fall 21% - must be all those people getting off it !!!

PharmaTimes | Industry News | World News | …although generics batter GSK fourth-quarter pharma sales: "Amid all the talk of job losses, GlaxoSmithKline’s fourth-quarter financials revealed a 4% decline in pharmaceutical sales to £5.80 billion, hit again by generic competition and lower revenues of the diabetes drug Avandia.

Sales of Avandia (rosiglitazone) were down 24% to £147 million, while generic competition in the USA hit its central nervous system drugs hard. Revenues from Paxil/Seroxat (paroxetine) fell 21% to $154 million, while another antidepressant, Wellbutrin (bupropion), slumped 63% to £66 million."

Seroxat firm to drop dependence claim
18 May 03

GlaxoSmithKline will change the wording on the patient information leaflet for Seroxat (paroxetine) to remove the claim that the drug is 'not addictive'.

GSK made its decision after considering 1,400 e-mails from patients about their experiences of taking Seroxat, which were featured on BBC TV's Panorama earlier this month.

The company will not change the wording provided to GPs in the summary of product characteristics. A statement said: 'We acknowledge that patients may get symptoms on stopping Seroxat. Although we maintain Seroxat is not addictive, we have proposed to take out that specific wording as we realised on talking to patients it did not add to their understanding of what to expect when they stop taking the product.

'We are not proposing to change the wording to doctors on the SPC. The statement that Seroxat does not cause dependence will remain because this terminology is clearly understood by health care professionals.'

uksurvivors : Message - despite legal aid Efexor addiction case failed

uksurvivors : Message: Re: legal aid obtained for UK Efexor addiction case sept 2001: "from -

Regrets & Lessons.

My main regret concerning all of the above is that the drug's manufacturer has never been forced to compensate the patients who suffered as a result of it's failure to provide full and frank disclosure at the outset of all of the problems which, it is certain, it knew to exist. I suppose that this injustice is why I have chosen to create this page on my new site at this time - at the very least the injustice itself should be recorded as a testament to all those who suffered as a result of the lies and half-truths which they were told by the manufacturer of this drug.

Also, I would like to think that the medical profession and the various drug regulators may have learned a lesson from the manufacturer's dishonesty about Venlafaxine, but, even today, many doctors prescribe the drug without any apparent awareness of the true nature of the drug's side effects and withdrawal symptoms and (in the UK) the regulators still do not insist that all of the clinical trials data is disclosed, allowing pharmaceutical companies to continue to withhold crucial information from doctors and patients alike"

Patients used as drug 'guinea pigs'Firms pay out millions to doctors to test medicines

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2003/feb/09/health.nhs

Patients used as drug 'guinea pigs'Firms pay out millions to doctors to test medicinesAntony Barnett, public affairs editor guardian.co.uk, Sunday 9 February 2003 01.24 GMT Article historyWhen Italia Sudano went for a check-up with her GP, Dr Robert Adams, she was in good health. Her husband had died a few months earlier and her blood pressure was a little high.
Yet nothing could have prepared Sudano, 72, for the nightmare that was to follow and the discovery of a trail of greed and fraud that went right to the heart of the medical profession.

She was astonished to discover that her trusted GP had been using her as a guinea pig by giving her tablets which had not been medically approved. Worse still, he was being paid to do so by a pharmaceutical company.

An investigation by The Observer has revealed that many doctors are risking their patients' health by subjecting them to medical trials without their knowledge.

Sudano's ordeal began when Adams took a blood test and asked her to return the next week. She had been living at Letchworth in Hertfordshire since arriving from Italy 50 years earlier and she trusted British doctors.

Over the next few weeks Adams asked Sudano to return for more blood tests. By the end of the second month her arms were black and blue. Her son, Joe, said they looked as though they had been slammed in a door. She said: 'At one point I asked if he was selling my blood.'

Little did Sudano know how close to the truth her comment was. On her last visit, Adams took a bottle of pills from the top drawer of his desk and suggested Sudano take one a day. While she thought it strange she wasn't being given a prescription, she trusted her doctor.

But within hours of swallowing the pill, she could hardly walk because she was so dazed. Her face had swollen up badly and she was in considerable pain.

She stopped taking the tablets and complained to Hertfordshire Health Authority. This sparked an investigation that led to one of the largest cases of medical research fraud ever uncovered in Britain. It emerged that over the previous five years Adams had earned more than £100,000 from drug companies, including the European giants AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer. They were all paying him to test their new drugs on his patients. Like Sudano, many of his patients had never given their consent and had no knowledge they were being used as human guinea pigs in a medical trial. Patients with no symptoms were given drugs and others who needed proper medication were given placebos. Adams was receiving almost £1,000 for each patient.

Last month Adams was found guilty by the General Medical Council (GMC) of serious professional misconduct and suspended for 12 months. The GMC's lawyer described it as 'assault' and Sudano is now looking to sue Adams.

GlaxoSmithKline was using Adams to study its anti-depressant Paroxetine, but had to cancel the trial at a cost of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The drugs industry talks of bad apples and the odd errant doctor milking the system but insists that trials using GPs are essential for medical advances and that payment to doctors for the extra work involved is ethically correct.

But an investigation by The Observer suggests the problem of GPs using patients as guinea pigs without their consent is more widespread. Some 3,000 doctors each year are paid by drug firms to sign up their patients to tests and on average 15 patients are needed for each trial. With doctors picking up £1,000 per patient, drug companies are spending £45m on getting doctors onside. There is no suggestion the companies are implicated in moves to carry out the tests by doctors on patients secretly.

Medical fraud experts estimate that one per cent of all drug trials involve fraud, including failure to get proper consent from patients. This means hundreds of patients a year are being given unapproved and potentially dangerous drugs without their knowledge.

The Observer has discovered that in the last five years the GMC has taken action in a dozen cases involving GPs undertaking fraudulent research. Examples include:

· Dr Vasu Agrawal from Chigwell, Essex, removed samples of womb from menopausal women as part of a trial into a new hormone replacement drug called Divina Nova. Agrawal failed to tell the women they were testing a drug that could have serious side-effects. Agrawal, who forged signatures on consent forms, received almost £6,000 from Orion Pharma International.

· Dr Paul Chima from Edinburgh is estimated to have received more than £200,000 from a range of pharmaceutical companies for testing their new drugs for angina, asthma, high blood pressure and depression. He failed to warn patients of possible side-effects and offered one a £2,000 bribe not to give evidence against him.

· Dr James Boschler from south London was given £22,500 from Bayer and Solvay Healthcare. He claimed to have signed up 36 patients, but 25 of the consent forms were discovered to be forgeries.

The country's foremost investigator of medical research fraud is Peter Jay, the former Metropolitan Police detective chief inspector who arrested serial killer Dennis Nilsen. Since 1996 Jay has run MedicoLegal Investigations, an independent body, and has taken 12 doctors to the GMC.

Jay is investigating six further cases, including one involving a GP in Manchester. Dr Mark Northfield is alleged not to have obtained consent from patients for entering them into trials to test drugs manufactured by Bayer and Roche to treat high blood pressure and heart problems. Northfield is contesting the allegations before the GMC professional conduct committee.

Jay said: 'While the industry has become more alert to the problems over the last decade there is still clearly a worrying and persistent problem in research fraud involving doctors. This is not just an issue of patient safety, but a problem that might lead to bad drugs being approved or good drugs failing to be approved.'

The Observer's revelations of the continuing problem of research fraud have sparked calls for industry guidelines to be toughened up. David Hinchcliffe, the Labour chair of the House of Commons Health Select Committee, described the situation as bordering on 'scandalous' and said his committee would look into the issue.

He said: 'The relationship between the drug firms and the medical profession is one that needs to be thoroughly investigated. It is extremely worrying that patients' trust is being abused by doctors who are more interested in making money from the pharmaceutical industry.'

Dr Evan Harris, health spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, suggested that doctors involved in trials should be subject to on-the-spot inspections and that a patient's consent to take part in a drug trial should be given outside the GP's surgery, for example to a research officer acting for the firm.
