Mr McDonnell, who knows the family well, said he fully supported its stance in seeking a formal apology from the British Army.
He said: “I welcome the HET report into the unlawful killing of Billy McKavanagh in 1971. This report confirms what people in the area have known since that day - that he was an innocent man gratuitously shot by the army – then lied about.
“I fully support the family’s stance seeking an apology and this vindicates their dignified campaign to seek justice for Billy McKavanagh.”
