Billy McKavanagh ‘gratuitously’ shot by army - says SDLP South Belfast MP Dr Alasdair McDonnell

McDonnell: Billy McKavanagh ‘gratuitously’ shot by army

SDLP South Belfast MP Dr Alasdair McDonnell has welcomed the findings of the Historical Enquiries Report into the unlawful killing of Billy McKavanagh in 1971 in the Markets Area.

Thu 11th August

Mr McDonnell, who knows the family well, said he fully supported its stance in seeking a formal apology from the British Army.

He said: “I welcome the HET report into the unlawful killing of Billy McKavanagh in 1971. This report confirms what people in the area have known since that day - that he was an innocent man gratuitously shot by the army – then lied about.

“I fully support the family’s stance seeking an apology and this vindicates their dignified campaign to seek justice for Billy McKavanagh.”
