THE LATE Sebastian Creane warned his girlfriend to run for her life before he was brutally murdered by Shane Clancy last August at his Cuala Grove home.

An open verdict was recorded at the inquest into the death of Shane Clancy, held in Wicklow last Thursday.

The 22-year-old fatally stabbed Sebastian Creane, also 22, and attacked his brother Dylan and girlfriend Jennifer Hannigan in the Creane family home in the early hours of August 16 last year.

His own body was found at the rear of the house. He had suffered a number of self-inflicted knife wounds.

Clancy had been going out with Jennifer for three years up to March 2009. He ended the relationship but became depressed when he found out she was seeing Sebastian Creane.

The dead man's mother Leonie Fennell told the inquest that she believe his actions were the result of his adverse reaction to anti-depressants. IT WAS like 'All hell breaking loose,' Dylan Creane told the jury at the inquest into the death of Shane Clancy, the man who murdered his brother Sebastian.

Seb Creane's girlfriend Jennifer Hannigan told the inquest that his final heroic act was to scream 'run, Jen, run,' before calling his brother Dylan for help.

Sebastian Creane died in his parents' bedroom after being stabbed by Shane Clancy last August; it emerged at last week's inquest into Clancy's death.

Creane had been in the Eagle House pub in Sandycove with twin brothers Gareth and Ross Cahill. They met Clancy there and went on to the Queens nightclub. Clancy then offered the three men a lift home to Bray.

Shane had been very quiet all night and had driven aggressively on the way home, said Gareth Cahill in a statement.

He told Sebastian that he knew where he lived. Sebastian then showed Gareth a text reading 'He knows where I live. He will have an axe murderer after me.'

Ross Cahill said Sebastian had not wanted to take a lift from Shane. He had the impression that Shane wanted to talk to Sebastian alone.

Ross later texted Sebastian saying 'Are you f***ing crazy you should definitely stay here. That guy is not right. Make sure he drops you at another address.'

However, Sebastian and Shane had a cup of tea together in the kitchen of the Cuala Grove house.

He was asked to leave when he asked for a knife to fix his shoe. He left the house and returned with a set of kitchen knives.

The inquest heard that Clancy was known as a kind and charitable young student who became depressed after his break-up from Jennifer Hannigan, also injured in the attack.

Ms. Hannigan told the inquest that Shane was jealous of her relationship with Sebastian Creane and started to 'behave strangely.'

Ms Hannigan said that Clancy had visited her father's workplace on August 15, the day before the fatal attack. She was there and hid.

Clancy told her dad that he was 'put on the planet to love me and nobody would love me as much as he did,' said Ms. Hannigan.

He became agitated after taking the anti-depressant Cipramol, his mother said, and tried to take his own life.

Det. Insp. Keenaghan from Bray Garda Station, who headed up the investigation into the two deaths, outlined the circumstances surrounding the attack.

He said that Shane and Sebastian, who had friends in common, had been on a night out. They both arrived at Mr. Creane's house in Cuala Grove at around 3.20 a.m. on August 16, 2009.

Clancy left and went to Dunnes Stores in Cornelscourt and bought a block of five knives. While he was gone, Jennifer arrived at the Creane household. She got a text from her exboyfriend Shane saying he had done something stupid and was going to die.

She rang him, and then saw him outside holding his chest. Seb went to help and was wounded by the other young man.

He went upstairs to his brother Dylan, whose girlfriend Laura Mackey was also in the house. He told Dylan he had been stabbed then went into his parents' room where he was later found dead.

Dylan told the inquest he was awoken by screaming, with Sebastian saying: 'I've been stabbed.'

He ran downstairs and a person came towards him, saying 'It's okay, it's okay.'

Clancy grabbed him and Dylan felt thumps on his back and left side. 'I realised this guy was trying to kill me,' he said.

Dylan fended off his attacker with a Swiss army knife on a keyring. He had already been stabbed nine times.

Clancy went after Jennifer. He punched and kicked her and stabbed her in the back. The handle of the weapon broke in her back and he grabbed another knife from the kitchen with which he stabbed Dylan Creane nine times.

Clancy then went into the garden and stabbed himself 19 times. His body was found in a crouching position in a shrubbery in a pool of blood, with the knife next to him.

He had stabbed himself six times in the chest and upper abdomen and died of a knife wound to the heart.

Jennifer told the inquest that she and Shane had broken up in March 2009 after a three-year relationship. 'Shane was the first to say it,' she said, remarking that the relationship had 'run its course.'

She described a complete change in Clancy after he found out she was dating Sebastian Creane. 'He changed in the way he walked, talked, everything,' she said.

Sebastian texted Jennifer on the night of the attack telling her Shane was out in Dalkey. She later went over to his house where he told her that the night had been 'surreal.'

Shane then rang and texted Jennifer saying that he 'did something stupid and was going to die.'

When they realised the troubled young man was outside, Sebastian went out to help. 'What the f**k is that?' he shouted, before shouting out to his girlfriend to run for her life.

An hour later two men were dead and two people injured following Shane Clancy's frenzied onslaught.
