The Church of Scientology is facing two separate lawsuits filed on behalf of a 20-year-old man who reportedly ran away from the religious sect for allegedly violating California's child labor and wage laws.
The suits, filed in state court in Los Angeles, contend that Daniel Montalvo spent his childhood working at least 40 hours a week for the church's Sea Organization.
Montalvo reportedly moved with his parents to the church's headquarter in Clearwater, Florida, when he was 5 years old. Montalvo was reportedly transferred to Los Angeles when he was 15, where he worked for the church until leaving in September 2010.
The lawsuit claims that Montalvo was only permitted to attend school one day a week and often worked more than 100 hours a week earning wages between $35 to $50 per week. One of the suits also claims that the teen was injured while working at the church and denied immediate medical attention.
Montalvo has also filed a wage and hour claim with the state of California's Division of Labor Standards asking for more than $150,000 in back wages.
The Sea Organization was created in 1968 as a fraternal religious order of the Church of Scientology.
